Trekking in the beautiful Langtang Valley of NepalSituated in the Central Himalaya, Langtang is the closest national park to Kathmandu. The park boundary extends from 20 miles north of Kathmandu all the way to the Nepal-China (Tibet) border. Langtang National Park is home to some of the most diverse eco-systems in the Central Himalayas. These include small areas of subtropical forest to mid-elevation forests of temperate oak and pine to alpine scrub and grasses giving way to bare rocks and snow. Oaks, pine, maple, fir, blue pine, hemlock, spruce and various species of rhododendron make up the main forest species. These forested areas provide habitat for a wide range of animals including wild dog, Red Panda, pika, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan Thar, rhesus monkey and common langur. About 45 villages are situated within the park boundaries, which have influenced the natural environment over the centuries.

The newest addition to our Lodge Trek Series enters the Langtang Valley and beautiful Gosainkund Lakes via the crossing of the Laurabina La pass at 15,120 feet. Langtang attracts far fewer trekkers than Nepal’s other main trekking areas of Everest and Annapurna. The valleys of Langtang were first explored by Bill Tilman, the well known Himalayan explorer and mountaineer, who described it as “one of the world's most beautiful valleys”. From our lodge at Kyangin Gompa, we will explore the impressive glaciated upper valley surrounded by high Himalayan peaks. Langtang was declared a National Park in 1976, consists mostly of mountainous terrain and home to approximately 3,000 ethnically diverse people; the Tamangs, Yolmus and Bhotias, who originated from Tibet. The eastern upper meadows of the Langtang Valley abruptly end in a massive mountain wall, forming the frontier with Tibet.
