9 Days: A LESS TRAVELED SCENIC HIKE TO THE TOP OF AFRICA
▪ Kilimanjaro's quietest route
▪ The beautiful Mawenzi
▪ Hiking to the top of Africa (19,332 feet)
▪ Time-tested acclimatization schedule
▪ Fully-supported camping trek
At 19,332 feet / 5,894 meters, Kilimanjaro is the high point of Africa and, therefore, one of the world’s seven continental summits. In fact, it is technically the easiest of the “Seven Summits,” but this does not mean that it should be underestimated. Whichever route you choose to tackle, the height gain of around 13,000 feet / 4,000 meters cannot be avoided and this is the reason why Kilimanjaro presents a considerable challenge to even the fittest of hikers. Flying in to Kilimanjaro International Airport gives us speedy access to our comfortable hotel base in Moshi. We have chosen to make our ascent via the relatively remote, quiet and very scenic Rongai Route. It is an interesting drive around the mountain to get to the start of this route, on its northern slopes, close to the Kenyan border. In comparison to the routes on the south side of the mountain, the Rongai Route is much less traveled and we will encounter fewer trekkers during our relatively gradual ascent. Hiking through farmland, forest and open moorland, our spectacular campsite at Mawenzi Tarn and the long final day’s climb to the mountain’s summit at Uhuru Peak, are highlights of this exceptional hiking adventure. This is one of the more gradual of the routes to Kilimanjaro’s summit and, in addition, we have planned our itinerary to include some shorter hiking days to maximize our chances of success on Africa’s highest peak.
