THE HIGH PASSES AND REMOTE VALLEYS OF LOWER DOLPO
- Explore the village of Dho Tarap
- Cross the Numa La and Baga La passes
- Visit ancient Buddhist monasteries
- Spectacular Himalayan mountain views
Make a rendezvous with the remote Himalaya Mountains of Dolpo, the land Tibetan culture, high mountain passes, colorful villages and turquoise lakes. Lying along the traditional salt trade with Tibet, the Dolpo region is situated north of the great Dhaulagiri Range in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. The Dho Tarap and Phoksundo Lake Trek is meant for real adventurers wanting an off-the-beaten-path camping experience. This remote region in western Nepal was first opened to foreigners in 1990. Our trekking route passes through the Shey-Phoksundo National Park offering spectacular mountain scenery, Buddhist monasteries, nomad yak caravans, beautiful forests and rugged canyons.
Made famous by Peter Matthiessen and his 1973 snow leopard odyssey, Dolpo is a remote region in northwestern Nepal. Even today, trekking in Dolpo remains both a cultural journey and Himalayan exploration ripe with pristine mountain vistas, high pass crossings and adventurous, challenging territory often referred to as “the last enclave of pure Tibetan culture on earth”.
Our new Dho Tarap and Phoksundo Lake Trek is part of our Himalayan Classic Trek Series. In 2021, we are able to arrange this trip as a private departure on custom dates during the months of April, May, September, October and November for a minimum group size of 2 people.
