Without a doubt, trekking in Bhutan is a different kind of hiking experience. Pristine wilderness, surreal landscapes, distinct Buddhist cultural & alpine lakes and meadows combine to make Bhutan a hikers’ paradise. And few treks in Bhutan can compare in beauty to the journey to the grand peak of Masagang.

The trails to Masagang are as old as time and nowadays largely used by yak herders traveling between grazing pastures. Our itinerary takes a detour to Laya Village, exposing us to a unique social and cultural aspect of Bhutan’s Layap people. Along the way we pass through Army checkpoints reminding us of our close proximity to China/Tibet border in the north, tranquil houses built in traditional manner, yak herder huts, thick forests and alpine meadows. Finally the landscape opens up to the grandeur beneath Masagang and other neighboring snow-capped peaks. This area is sacred to the locals and ingrained in centuries of history and lore. For us, our physical effort is rewarded by the magnitude of sheer beauty drawing us into a sense of awe for Bhutan’s natural and spiritual world.

The Masagang & Laya Village Trek of Bhutan (Camping Trip) is part of our Himalayan Classic Trek Series. Our Classic Treks are led by an experienced, English-speaking Bhutanese Guide and full support crew. In 2024, we are able to arrange this trek starting on any day of the week during the months of late March through May and mid-September to early November for groups of 1 to 12 people.
