A PILGRIMAGE TO THE WORLD’S MOST SACRED MOUNTAIN
- Short circuit trek of Mount Kailash
- Scenic flights between Kathmandu and Lhasa
- Travel across Tibet
- Visit centuries-old monasteries
- Walk with Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims
Each year Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims from the world over make the long, strenuous journey across the Tibetan Plateau to Mount Kailash in western Tibet – the most sacred mountain in the world and to some the true center of the universe. One circuit or kora around Mount Kailash is believed to wipe away a lifetime of sin.
Our new Mount Kailash Tour begins with the dramatic flight from Kathmandu, across the spine of the main Himalayan Range to the capital of Tibetan spiritual life in Lhasa. We will spend two days acclimatizing to Lhasa’s 11,000 foot altitude while visiting some of the city’s most important monuments, including the iconic Potala Palace.
Driving west across the Tibetan Plateau we will visit famous places such as Yamdrok Tso (lake), Gyantse and Shigatse before finally arriving beside the holy waters of Lake Manasarovar, situated beneath the sacred mountain. Our short (52k / 32 mile) but strenuous kora begins at the village of Darchen, traveling in a counter-clockwise direction across wide open and seemingly unending stretches of barren land, lush green valleys, snow capped peaks and pristine blue lakes. Crossing the Dolma La Pass at 18,525 feet / 5,470 meters will present a great physical and mental challenge to everyone in the group.
This pilgrimage and kora of Mount Kailash is a tradition going back thousands of years. This is a unique opportunity to walk with and follow in the footsteps of those of pilgrims that have come before you. Good fortune is sure to bless those who try!
The Mount Kailash Kora Trek (Lodging Trip) is part of our Epic Himalayan Journey Series! These trips are led by one of our experienced trekking guides and represent the gourmet trekking offerings of the great Himalayan Range.
