TRAVERSING THE SPECTACULAR LANDSCAPE BETWEEN 8,000 METER GIANTS

  • Hiking in Nepal’s diverse national parks
  • Rich ethnic cultural of the Tamur and Arun valleys
  • Cross the Lumba Shumba pass (16,990 feet / 5,180 meters)
  • Exploring Olangchung Gola Village
  • Big-Time Himalayan views of Kangchenjunga and Makalu

Eastern Nepal is a mountain trekkers’ paradise. The little-traveled region between the 8,000 meter peaks of Kangchenjunga and Makalu contains two of the most diverse national parks in the Himalaya and are home to small farming communities, an amazing variety of birds, the endangered red panda and snow leopard. First opened in 2012, our new trekking vacation follows part of the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) and crosses several high and remote passes.

Our journey begins with a short flight to Bhadrapur on the plains of the Terrai and then a drive through the Himalayan foothills to Taplejung. Here, we begin trekking through a landscape of steep-sided river valleys containing sub-tropical forests and hillsides dotted with small villages and picturesque terraces of rice patties. Gaining height, we progress through farms of potatoes and barley and forests of rhododendron, juniper and pine before entering an alpine world of yak pastures where we are surrounded by the snowy peaks of the high Himalaya. After spending a day exploring the fascinating settlement of Olangchung Gola, we cross the high and remote Lumba Shumba Pass (16,990 feet / 5,180 meters), which marks the separation of the Tamur and Arun river valleys. This is simply a place of spectacular mountain grandeur! As one of our guides put it, “the views are amazeballs”! Descending into the Arun Valley we return to warmer climes and a colorful patchwork of agricultural landscape. This is an outstanding trek which sees few trekking groups, connects two of the world’s 8,000 meter giants and traverses a relatively untouched region of Nepal.

The Kangchenjunga to Makalu Trek (Camping Trip) is part of our Epic Himalayan Journey Series! These trips are led by one of our experienced trekking guides and represent the gourmet trekking offerings of the great Himalayan Range. In 2021, we are able to arrange this incredible trek starting on any day of the week during the months of October through late November for groups of 2 to 10 people.
